Yesterday I found out that WA state has absurdly lax gun laws. In fact, to acquire a conceal and carry permit here all one needs to do is not be a felon.
Needless to say this means I will be fulfilling my destiny to be The Worst Liberal and getting a handgun.
I am down to two probable candidates, a Glock 23 .40 is winning out based on price but I would also kind of like a 1911. Input is welcome (mandatory)!

When I saw the tractor photo, I just assumed you were already carrying.
I shot a Taurus 1911 about a month ago and really liked the feel of it. Also, very accurate for a rental pistol and a knock off of the Colt. Haven't used the 23, but liked the 21 and the 17.
I think you should test it the US Army way: buy a side of beef and then see which one has more cow stopping power. This information will come in handy on your next hogging run at the local bar.
Thanks for keeping it classy, Kurt!
I agree that the 1911 is probably superior for long-range accuracy but the quality of pistol declines predictably with price; a $1000 1911 shoots much better than a $500 one. On the other hand a factory-new Glock chambered in .40 is reasonably accurate at medium distances and can be purchased with a hard case, cleaning kit and lifetime warranty for around $600.00
Choices are hard. :(
Go with the Glock if your concerned about price. Let's face it, unless you're really planning on long-distance firings the Glock should suit you just fine.
Well, I am partial to the 1911, but the Glock seems to be the better deal. When I was asked what I wanted for a Law school grad present, I asked for matching left and right custom 1911's in a mahogany case. The left engraved with the word "Truth" and the other "Justice." I figured it would make an excellent addition to the office and the perfect test for potential interns/associates. No interview, just a timed test of how fast they could field strip and clean them.
Instead, my parents went with option 2: corrective eye surgery. It's cool to have perfect vision, but I kinda regret giving up that dream.
